Intelligent Blu-ray Disk Technology

Published: Jul 13th, 2009 | Author: reyhan Add Comment

Digital encoded audio & video information is stored on disks in form of pits. These pits are spiral grooves. These pits originate from the disk’s center and run through to its edges. Other side of pits is read by the help of laser in order to read and execute the program or movie which has been recorded on the DVD media disk. The pits on the DVD disk have to be more closely packed and smaller in size to store more information. The reading laser has to be more precise in order to read data from the smaller pits. DVD media uses red-laser while blue-laser is used in the new Blu-ray media disc format. This is how the Blu-ray got its name because of the blue laser. Red laser has 650 nanometers wavelength. On the other hand the wavelength of blue laser is much shorter which 405 nanometers is. Smaller sized laser beam can focus more accurately and precisely.

The blue laser has the ability to read to read data from the pits that have size of 0.15 µm (microns). One micron is equivalent to 10-6 meters. The pits on the DVD disk are twice as bigger than that of the pits on Blu-ray media disc. Track pitch in the DVD disc is 0.74 microns which has been reduced to 0.32 microns in the Blu-ray media disk. The shorter track pitch, smaller laser beam and smaller pits, all these features assist the Blu-ray disk to record data of 25-GB on a single layer. Now the users have more luxury as the recording capacity of Blu-ray media disk is 5 times more than DVD disk.

The thickness of DVD and Blu-ray disk is same. The thickness of both disks is 1.2 millimeters. The data recording procedure is different for both disk types. DVD disc has 2 polycarbonate layers and the thickness of each layer is 0.6 mm. The information which is to be recorded on DVD disk is sandwiched between these 2 layers.

A layer on top of the recorded information can lead to birefringence. In birefringence, the laser light is refracted into 2 separate beams by the substrate layer. Data cannot be read from the DVD disk if the laser light splits too wide. Disk tilt is another problem that is caused if the surface of DVD disc is not totally flat or it is not precisely perpendicular to the laser the light. The laser beam distorts due to disk tilt. Very involved manufacturing procedure is required in DVD disk to avoid these problematic issues.

These problems have been solved in the Blu-ray disk format. In Blu-ray disk format, the data is recorded on top of polycarbonate layer whose thickness is 1.1 mm. This technique of Blu-ray overcomes birefringence. So as a result the readability problems are avoided in the Blu-ray disk format. In Blu-ray disc format, the objective lens and the recording layer are very closer to each other.

This closeness to the objective lens virtually eliminates the disk tilt problem which enhances the performance. The outer side of Blu-ray media disk is protected by a hard coating because the recorded information is very closer to the blu-ray disk’s surface. This hard coating feature makes the Blu-ray media unique, robust, efficient and more advantageous. The hard coating layer protects the Blu-ray disk surface from fingerprints and scratches. Therefore, the Blu-ray media disc is able to store information for longer time periods. Blu-ray media format is more reliable and robust.

Exabyte VXA tape format has been geared specifically in accordance with the user’s growing requirements. VXA tape offers backup solutions at affordable prices. The customer’s investment is also protected as the VXA tape versions are backward compatible. Cost per gigabyte of VXA storage format is very low that makes it the best backup storage medium for the enterprises. The Exabyte VXA tape provides flexibility to the businesses to select the VXA tape version which lies within the limits of their allocated budget.

The Exabyte VXA products are disaster-tested. The leading OEMs of the world are manufacturing the efficient VXA tape products. Information is stored in VXA in the form of unique data packets. Unmatched data reliability, fast speed, robustness, increased capacity and low operational cost are the highlights and powerful features of VXA tape technology. Data reliability of Exabyte VXA is unparalleled. This feature makes it unique from other tape formats.

Independent labs as well as Exabyte have tested the VXA cartridges to verify its durability and capability to recover information in case of any disaster. Under severe conditions, the Exabyte VXA technology delivers unprecedented performance at low cost. The conditions under which the VXA cartridges are tested include violent vibration test, freezing the cartridges. The tape cartridges are even immersed in boiling water, volcanic dust and hot coffee. These tests are conducted to ensure accurate data restoration and reliability of VXA tapes. VXA tape format has developed a digital solution that overcomes the mechanical issue of alignment between tape reel and drive head. In conventional tapes, this tape to head is a common problem that leads to failure of data storage operations.

VXA tape solution is far superior and durable than other conventional formats. The VXA drives use the packet technology and the data is read & written in data packets. These data packets are individually addressed. Conventional tape formats use different technique to read and record information. In traditional tape formats, the data tracks are embedded on the media tape and each track on the tape reel is traced sequentially. On the other hand in VXA technology, the entire VXA tape reel’s face is swept for the purpose of reading and recording information.

VXA buffer during the reading cycle dynamically gathers the discrete packets and then reassembles them. The data reassembling process of Exabyte VXA tape is very efficient and precise that ensures increased data reliability. Similar data reassembling technique is used in VXA tape format and internet. Tight tolerances are maintained in the conventional tape formats with the help of highly machined components. This increases the overall manufacturing cost. Valuable Features Of LTO-3 Tape

Published: Jul 7th, 2009 | Author: reyhan Add Comment

The most advantageous and valuable feature of LTO3 tape technology is called the “data-rate matching”. This mechanism elevates the performance and assures error-free recording. The host’s data rate and the speed of network system are matched in this process of data-matching. This process used in LTO 3 tape lowers the difference among the data rates of both systems as closer as possible. In this way the data is transferred among the systems in an efficient manner with low error rate. Data-rate matching technique also eases off the stress & load on the media as well as on the tape drive. The enterprises investing in LTO-3 tape technology do not have to worry because it is fully backward compatible.

The LTO2 tape media can easily be read by the LTO-3 tape format and it can also write data onto the second generation ultrium tape. LTO3 format can read but it cannot write information on LTO-1 media. A large share of mid-range tape market is held by the LTO ultrium format. LTO 3 ultrium is the best tape storage format on which the organizations can count on. LTO 3 is a scalable and economical tape technology. Greater Reliability Of Fuji DDS-3 and DDS-4 Backup Tape Technologies

Published: Jul 5th, 2009 | Author: reyhan Add Comment

The DAT (Digital Audio Tape) acronym was established to consider the 3.81mm based recording technology that used 0.15 inch tape in recorder using helical scan mechanism. There are more tracks per inch in DAT tape format as that of the 8mm technology. In order to enable the DAT drives to store data reliably, the Digital Data storage (DDS) technology was introduced by Sony and HP Hewlett-Packard. Because of its outstanding performance, reliability, higher output and capacity, DDS is now known as the world standard in the category of backup tape technology.

Fuji has introduced advanced technology of “ATOMM” in its DDS-3 and DDS-4 tape cartridges which has enhanced their recording density and performance as well. This has resulted in a new enhanced version of DAT-72 compliant. These robust Fuji data tapes are metal coated with capacity to record 72GB data (compressed).  Double coating is done in these Fuji DDS data tapes.

ATOMM technology consists of a magnetic layer that is very thin which helps to improve the digital characteristics. The top layer has Metallic magnetic particles whose thickness is approximately 0.1µm to 0.5µm. This coating is done on a fine layer of titanium (non magnetic) which is ideal to get high recording density.  In order to enable the DAT drives to store data reliably, the Digital Data storage (DDS) technology was introduced by Sony and HP Hewlett-Packard. Because of its outstanding performance, reliability, higher output and capacity, DDS is now known as the world standard in the category of backup tape technology.

ATOMM Technology improves the output, robustness and efficiency of Fuji DDS tape format. This double structure of layer with non magnetic layer of titanium at bottom with on top the magnetic layer enables the bottom layer of the tape to behave as a lubricant reservoir. So, the Fuji DDS data tapes can work with greater reliability. So in this way the upper magnetic layer is all the times supplied adequate lubricant which ensures superior reliability and output. The head can not properly get in contact with the tape is the tape’s surface is not even. The loss of space ends up with lower output.

The ATOMM technology makes the tape surface of Fuji DDS3 & DDS-4 data tapes even more smother and improves the contact of tape and head for consistent high performance. Fuji DDS-4 tape format has huge capacity to record uncompressed data of 20GB. The yield strength of the Fuji DDS4’s tape is higher and thinner at the same time with which the tape in the data cartridge is also increased ensuring durability. The finer particle play important role in increasing the recording density. The other factors that contribute in enhancing reliability of the Fuji DDS4 tape technology is 4-S. These are “Symmetric Slider Spring Structure”. The slide section is redesigned and is highly rigid. The 4-S makes the movement of the slider section smoother. All these innovative technologies help archiving in long term.

Fuji DDS-4 tape cartridge is tough, rigid and the advanced features make its working life longer. The combination of lubricating system and 3-D network structure provide exceptional performance and durability.  Error rate of Fuji DDS-4 tape format is extremely low and the efficiency of output is very high. Its super calendaring mechanism and tape’s smooth base provide a mirror finish to the magnetic layer that helps to lower the spacing loss. Spacing loss is the major factor that creates errors. As the spacing loss is low in the Fuji DDS-4 tape format, so this eliminates the chances of errors.
