Intelligently Designed Sony AIT Tape
Sony AIT technology has been intelligently designed and engineered to deliver outstanding backup results. Advanced intelligent tape is the only format that has a pure metal layer and MIC chip. Both these features maximize the capacity and performance. A flash memory chip called MIC is included in the AIT tape cartridge whose purpose is to hold operational and directory information. The tape loading & ejection time has been reduced in the AIT format. The users can quickly access their desired recorded information as the data searching process has been improved in the Sony AIT format. The AIT media is coated with DLC (diamond like carbon).
The carbon coating in AIT media is very robust and its strength is 20 times more in comparison with metal-oxides. The carbon coating protects the tape media. The advantage is maximum life and durability. 100% pure cobalt used by Sony ensures high retentivity. In advanced metal evaporated process used in AIT tape, the magnetic layer is applied onto base film. The depositing is done without any binders and adhesives. Data recording process is enhanced by the AME technology. 260GB compressed and 100 GB native capacity can be recorded in single AIT-3 tape cartridge. The Sony AIT-3 tape format features LVDS ultra wide SCSI interface. It has the advantageous technology of ALDC (Advanced Lossless Data Compression). Sony AIT-3 tape drive also has a built-in head cleaner, which frequently cleans the AIT tape media when needed. The helical scan system improves the data density and space efficiency in AIT tape format. Helical scan also help to reduce the media wear. All the leading platforms and systems are supported by Sony AIT-3 that includes Windows 2000, NetWare, Windows NT, Linux and UNIX.
The signal output has been elevated in the Sony AIT-5 tape technology. MR head mechanism in AIT 5 tape is more sensitive which promotes the data integrity and enables higher capacity per AIT cartridge. AIT-5 is backward compatible with both standard media & WORM media of AIT-3 Ex, AIT-3 tape and AIT-4 backup tape. Dynamic Tracking system has been introduced in AIT-5 format.
Dynamic Tracking mechanism comprises of 4 heads. An actuator is used in AIT-5 tape format that adjusts the position of head with the AIT media. In this way the tape head can trace and scan the narrow and small data track paths thus ensuring accurate & precise data reading. Sony AIT 5 has the ability to perform multi-functions and also has the WORM capability. The AIT5 tape drives support both the WORM media and the rewritable AIT tape cartridges. Sony was the pioneer that introduced the write-once read-many technology in mid-range drive.
High level reliability is offered by AIT-5. Soft touch loading system and automatic head cleaner makes the Sony AIT-5 even more durable and efficient. Cooling system of the Sony AIT-5 tape drive has been isolated form the mechanism of tape. Therefore the entrance of airborne pollutants in tape path is limited thus enhancing the data reliability. The MTBF of AIT-5 drive is 400,000 hours.
